Oooh la la Paris!

By Jillsabs - Posted on 10 September 2009

I used to be majorly obsessed with all things French, so I took French classes (the language not the other thing:p), bought books, listened to instructional CDs, picked up a guide book and tucked in French cuisine (mmmm....butter!). But of course, the best way to be French is to look French! Here are some tips I culled from the net on how to look like a Parisienne:

1. Ditch the sweats. Casual dressing is not limited to shorts and flipflops, and the chic Parissiene does casual with aplomb, recognizing that going cash is not an excuse to let yourself go.

2. Go for well-fitting clothes that suit your frame. This one needs a little introspection and a lot of honesty. Not everyone can look good in skinny jeans, so if you find yourself running out of breath because of a too tight waistband or your legs look more dumpy than delectable in those leggings, let it go. It's ok to not try and look like an emaciated, walking hanger.

3. Always favor quality over quantity. Don't devour every fashion trend just because Vogue says so. Follow your fashion barometer and go for your tried and tested pieces. Splurge on classics because those never go out of style and be more discerning with your shopping. Less is always more.

4. Mix up high end items with your everyday pieces for understated elegance. Never ever go designer from head to foot. It's just plain crass :(

5. Keep makeup natural and do not overdo hairstyles. Or at least try to look that way. French style appears very natural, as if they didn't obsess and spend hours over their look. But we all know better:p

Here's a nice quote from Focusonstyle to summarize the whole French allure:

"But French chic, is really not about designer labels and more about how you put it all together. It is about starting out with the right pieces that you can mix and match to wear anywhere. And, not obsessing about it. Have the poise to feel elegant yet slightly off-beat, polished but not glitzy, and self-confident enough to understand that the true meaning of chic is very individual."

Vive la France!

I used to love everything French, and like you, I also took French classes. Also watched French sitcoms and movies (but my basic French class did no help. I failed to understand every word!) Right now, I'm into everything Greece.
Anyway, these are really great. I always look for nice office attires, so I like the one in #4.

I just read a fantastic book about Greece! It's called "The Island" by Victoria Hislop.

It's the sort of book that takes you with it, transporting you to the seaside town of Plaka.

I began to crave for baklava after reading that:p

oh by the way, is the book available here?

Hi Maj,

I lucked out and saw a heavily discounted copy in Powerbooks about a month or two ago. It said on the cover that it was an international bestseller and it was set in a foreign country so I immediately bought a copy and never regretted it one bit :p

Tell me if you can't find a copy anymore and I'll mail you my copy, just return it afterwards :)
