Etsy: Shop Local

By Jillsabs - Posted on 08 September 2009

Etsy is the antithesis to all things mass-produced and celebrity endorsed. It features handmade creations and is a veritable treasure trove of all sorts of cute and unique items.

I checked out some of the Philippine based sellers in Etsy and these three stood out for me:

My Vintage Lolita sells adorable headpieces that channel the hippie vibe.

I don't think I can pull off this floral headband, but isn't it gorgeous?!

Craftjunky makes crocheted shoes that are wonderful for indoor use. They have non-skid appliques sewn on the soles, so there's no danger of slipping and injuring yourself.

Papers and Tschai understands that in spite of all our technological advancement, there's still nothing quite like putting pen to paper (even if it's only to make another list, as in my case).

I'm crushing on this hardbound leather journal with specialty paper. Not that I'd have anything remarkable to scribble on it, I just think my To Do List for the day will look extra important if written on its buff colored laid paper:p

Not really a local seller, La Pomme is by Apol Lejano, former Good Housekeeping editor, who is now based in France. From editing a glossy, she now makes whimsical home decors and plush toys. Why are some people just so darn talented?!

And I can pretty much say the same about all the other Etsy artists.

Etsy is soooo addicting! There's just something about handmade pieces that mass-produced items (not even with all their savvy marketing campaigns) can never have. It's probably that little thing called love.

There are so many wonderful shops there. It actually encouraged us to make almost all our products hand-made (from scratch!). :) I've just set-up oOhwables & Co. there (hehe, plug!), 2 years ago, I was just buying gifts, now I'm (hopefully) selling some.

Awesome post! I really do love Etsy, if only I could afford everything I wanted there. I didn't think to look for local-based sellers though. the journals look so nice :)

Another former Summit editor, Maya Calica (of Candy magazine and Seventeen Philippines) also has hand-made products sold on Etsy. :) She does these wonderful, wonderful inspirational cards that are perfect as gifts or just for sprucing up your personal space at work or at home. :) See pocketinspiration.wordpress.com. I've bought from her already and will readily buy again.

I love those crocheted indoor shoes! They're so cute! Hehehe. I'm not too familiar with Etsy though, so I don't know how to navigate through it. How do you think I can place an order for a pair? Hihi! =D TIA!

Hi Dianne,

To buy from an Etsy seller, you have to first register. After you do, click on the item you want and then click "add to cart" :)
