Oily Dilemmas

Hi Kikay Exchange! Your website is so informative and I now rely on it to get info on beauty and fashion. I have oily skin and would like to know what make-up, cleansers, and moisturizers I can use. Makeup stays put on my face for like half a day. I would also like to minimize my pores. I've tried the Belo Pore Minimizer and the VMV Pore Toner and didn't see any change. Help!
p.s. I'm a stay at home mom but like to look good when I go out, even if its just to run errands.
Kat
Hi Kat!
Just like you, I also have oily skin and am very much prone to blemishes. I've consulted with several dermatologists and they all essentially said the same thing: Less is more.
For my facial cleanser, the two most recommended by my dermatologists were Cetaphil and plain old glycerin soap. Apparently mild cleansing is the best for oily skin, because the more your facial wash strips your face of oil, the more your skin compensates for the loss by producing more oil. Oh yes, it is indeed a vicious cycle.
As regards your pores, I'm afraid that you're more or less stuck with what you have. Yes dear, pores do not magically open and close as the spin doctors would have us believe. However, pores do appear larger with oily skin which brings us back to your first question, which is how to deal with oily skin. From experience, the only time that my skin really became less oily was when I took oral medication specifically intended for battling oily and acne prone skin. I tried using Diane a few years back and my skin did improve, as in friends gasped in amazement at how much better my skin looked after taking Diane (Note: Please click here for our past feature on Diane). BUT Diane is a contraceptive and has a lot of contraindications so it's not like aspirin which you can just pop whenever you feel like it.

My derma also recommended another oral medication (sorry, don't remember its name) BUT with the very direct warning that I shouldn't even think of having a baby while taking it because it will do weird things to my body and perhaps even the baby. Scary stuff. Do you see the pattern here? Oral medication is the best and sure-fire way to manage oily skin. However, and I must be honest here, I personally find it scary to be meddling around with my body in such a way just to have clearer skin. If you do decide on this plan of attack, please consult your physician first. In the meantime, use a gentle facial wash (and astringent as needed, my personal fave is Celeteque), stock up on oil blotters, familiarize yourself with mineral makeup (the best makeup IMHO for sensitive and oily skinned gals), lay off the moisturizer (All the dermatologists I've asked were unanimous in saying that oily skin does not need any more moisturizer, unless it has salicylic acid or other similar acne fighting ingredients), slather on oil-free sunblock and remember that having oily skin simply means that you will not succumb to the leathery-skin look in the future. Thanks for writing to Kikay Exchange!

hi there. does anyone know how to put eyebrow make-up like the artistas nowadays? ung parang smooth ung effect nya? that kilay is very common here in the philippines if you're an artista. i would like to know how to have that look. and what type/brand of make-up should i use to achieve that look. thank you.
Hi Rinoa,
Here's a nice video tutorial from Michelle Phan on how to groom and create great looking eyebrows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PugziVUikEg
Hope it helps :)
Oral medication is always good for oily skin. i have keep some cream name which reduce pores : Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum™ - NEW #16225 Regards, Pore Minimizing Products
Is Cinema Secrets concealer expensive? Where can i buy it here in Manila? Surgery is expensive, I just want a concealer that "FILLS IN" my deep acne scars, so that even up close and in bright lights ,my scars will not be noticeable at all, is this possible ,?
Well the best facial wash is "Obagi foaming gel" I love it! Then belo's pore minimizer and chat 2%. I don't use the daily peel because its too harsh on my skin. Chat 2% is enough for me to exfoliate. Try this.
i had a good skin before, and i used nu skin tinted moisturizer in order to hide those scars, blemishes and other things that i don't want others to see. last april, i don't often apply nu skin tinted moisturizer since i seldom go out, then when i put the tinted moisturizer again, the next morning i had so many blemishes that until now, im still having. i don't know what to do, i went to the derma and nothing seem to change. i have this oily skin also. i have tried almost everything to lessen this, i tried thefaceshop's liquid foundation, then tried again nu skin's tinted moisturizer, then nivea's tinted moisturizer but the day after i apply it, i get break outs unlike before. now, i want to try diane 35, it might help me in my problem but im still 17, i don't know how to get it and if its good for me. can someone help me?
do i need to have a prescription in order for me to buy Diane 35?

I've yet to find a perfect eyeliner and mascara for oily skin (and oily lids!)
But I just bought Lancome Hypnose mascara. I've heard good reviews about it.
For eyeshadow, before you put on any, put a primer first to make the eyeshadow last for a long time. A really good one is the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer.
hi! where did you bought your urban decay eyeshadow primer?
hi anna
- cinema secrets concealer foundation covers almost everything and pretty much stays put as long as you set it by dusting a little powder over it :) a thin layer applied using a wet sponge is good enough to cover most problem ;)
thanks kat for sharingÜ
Kat: I will :) thanks for the tip!
Hi Anna!
One foundation that I do use and has worked for my oily skin is Watercolors Maximum Makeup (as in it can stand bright lights-some artistas use this brand). It conceals scars and I only have to blot it with tissue when I get kinda dewy. But they replaced it with something else that I heard was just as good. But for everyday use, it might be a bit heavy. Try mo muna. They have a shop in Shangrila Mall. I wrote looking for a compact powder kinda foundation and will try what Kiara, Abbie and Jillsabs recommended.
*Jillsabs, you might want to try Watercolors too. Let me know if you will go and I'll hook you up with someone there.
And so the quest continues.... :-)
As much as i want to use mineral make-up, i cant. I have acne scars that i want to conceal. I tried mineral make-up but im not satisfied with the coverage. I tend to have lesser confidence since i know that blemishes are still visible.
hope you could help me (too) with some recommendable products. thanks!
Hi girls!
Thanks sooo much for your help. It's very useful information especially since I also have sensitive skin (I actually got a bad facial rash with a very popualar facial cream). I will try mineral makeup. It's something I haven't used yet. I'm thinking of documenting my findings on the cleansers and makeup that was suggested. Thanks again!
:-) Kat
Hi Kat,
Like you, I've always had the problem of oily skin and have tried everything (Diane 35, derma, Murad, Proactive, masks, "oil-free" make up, etc). It was either nothing seemed to work or I was scared of prolonged use (e.g. Diane).
Lately, a formula has been working wonders on my skin: Dermalogica's Medibac line + mineral make-up.
Dermalogica is sold at Rustan's Essenses. The Medibac line is specially formulated to suppress oil production, thus, preventing adult acne. After just one and a half week of use, my face has become remarkably clear and less oily. I don't even use blotters anymore. The starter kit (cleanser, clearing mattifier, sebum-clearing mask, overnight clearing gel, spot corrector) is sold at Php2,750. It was a good investment for me. :) Since I'm very satisfied with the line, I also bought Medibac's oil control lotion and pre-cleanse (make-up remover).
I suggest that you ask for samples first, try it for a week, then decide later if you want to buy.
As for make-up, I agree with JillSabs, mineral make-up is really best for oily skin.
Good luck!
The medicine for severe acne is Roaccutane, available by prescription only. Yes, you SHOULD NOT get pregnant while on this meds. You will get a deformed baby. I took this before when I was single and it really cleared up my severe back acne. But I don't take this anymore since I want to have another baby. Better safe than sorry.
To combat oily skin I use Diane 35. I've been using it since college. It also helped regulate my menstrual period.
For the pores, however, I went for Power Peel and Diamond Peel sessions at Facial Care Center.
Good information!

Hi Kat,
I'm also a gal with very oily skin. After trying different kinds of makeup (mousse foundation, tinted moisturizer, compact powder etc), I've discovered that mineral makeup works best on me.
I use loose powder for my foundation. I use Youngblood (available at Beauty Bar), but there are other brands that are also well-known like Bare Escentuals etc.
For moisturizer, use an oil-free one. I use Shu Uemura SPF 25 one. It's water-based and protects me from the sun.
For concealer (undereye circles), I like Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. This one doesn't fade away and looks good with yellow undertone skin.
For blush, I use Nars. Blush will naturally fade away on oily skin after 2-3 hours. Just reapply with your own pocket blush brush.
Your most important weapon for oily skin is the oil blotting sheet! I have to use this constantly. Maybe every 2-3 hours. I like using this blue one from Shiseido that I bought in Hong Kong. I'm not sure if it's available here. I don't like the film-paper one from Clean & Clear or Gatsby because it looks really greasy after use. Hahaha. But these will also work.
